You will see us refer to BUILDBASE throughout this project. We use them for the supply of most of our materials, as we have found their service and the expertise of all their staff, to be by far the best in our area.

Making A Start
We found a Building Society who were prepared to lend us the money for the building, payable in six stages, as we already owned the land.
We also needed "Self Build" insurance for all risks.

If there is a JCB working in your area, see the driver. He may be quite happy to dig your foundations during evenings or weekends for cash.

Piling and foundations were finished by July 1999, at a cost of £6,500.

Shop around for concrete. Get several quotes. Ensure your chosen company inspect your access before attempting delivery. You could be charged for wasted time.

The aim from then onwards was to get a watertight shell before the onset of bad weather. This was achieved by the end of October 1999. The shell cost £9,500.

Open a cash account with your local Builders Merchant in order to obtain "Trade" discounts. Make sure they know that you still compare their prices with other Merchants, it keeps them on thier toes!

The Foundation
Realising that we needed a piled foundation, we visited several projects in progress before choosing Van Elle Eastern. Their quotation was not the very cheapest but the standard of their work and their all-round professionalism made them the best.
